Since the 16th century Sharovkin Assumption Monastery is located on the high bank of the Zhizdra River.

By the 17th century the complex consisted of the following stone buildings: the Assumption Cathedral with the Chapel of St. John the Evangelist and a common porch, each topped up with a head and decorated inside with the ‘old wall handwritting’; the Church of St. Sergius of Radonezh with a refectory and cellar, all on the basements, with plank roofs and a head tiled with enamel; a belfry with a chiming clock.

The ensemble of the monastery has undergone significant changes by now. The cathedral has lost all of the roofing, and in the 90s the church people covered it with some pieces of iron, laid on the beams that they cut out in the forest (all that they could do then), it has also lost the enamel on the exterior and interior, including the wall paintings. Church of St. Sergius of Radonezh with a refectory have been ruined, the dome collapsed in the 80s, and only some pieces of walls managed to survive. The bell tower has lost the covered pathway that connected it to the cathedral, and the fence has been disassembled.

Now it’s all under restoration.
